What are Roman Shades?

What are Roman Shades?

Roman Shades are a great option for Window Treatments.  Like drapery panels, your fabric selection is endless.  No matter your style we can find something you will love.  Roman shades don’t require as much fabric as drapery panels, but they do require precise construction.  They come in a variety styles and you can have them in an outside mount or inside.  I will go over my top three favorites.

Flat Roman Shades

Flat Roman Shades are one of my favorites.  You can use whatever style fabric you want but I like using bolder patterns with this style.  You can also mix it up like I did here:

We took the pattern from the drapery panels that is in the adjacent room and used it to trim these Faux Roman Shades.  The solid color matches the solid pillows on the sofa, pulling the entire space together.  For this particular space we decided not to do drapery panels for two reasons.  We had a lot of windows to cover so the faux roman shades used a lot less fabric, and their dogs have a dogie door below these windows.  We didn’t want them pulling the drapery panels out the door.  I prefer the faux roman shades over your typical valance.

We did the opposite in the Master Bathroom Suite, with the pattern on top, and solid color for the trim.  I just love how these look.

The floral fabric by Trend in the Vern Yip Collection is also the fabric we used for the drapery panels in the Master bedroom, pulling it all together.

If you noticed we also created a valance for both sets of Roman Shades giving it a little bit more depth.  This is great to do on outside mounts.

Hobbled Roman Shades

I like to use a solid color or small pattern when using the Hobbled Roman Shade.  The reason being is if your print is too large, it can become too busy with the folds.  As you can see here it’s great in a more contemporary room that doesn’t have a lot of color, but you still get a bit of texture.

The Shade Store

Relaxed Roman Shade

The relaxed roman shade is also one of my favorites.  You can use a bolder fabric with this one just like you can the flat roman shade.  Here’s a beautiful example using an inside mount.

Whichever Roman Shade you go with it’s sure to add that finishing touch that every room deserves to have.  Like drapery panels, you can add blackout liners if you are needing a stronger light control.  There’s almost no limits to what you can do, especially if it’s custom made.

Custom Window Treatments

I say it all the time, you get what you pay for.  If you just want a typical window treatment to cover up a window quickly with not much thought, you have several options at your local box store.  Some are viable options depending on your need.  I have a few in my house.  One in my oldest daughter’s room because she needed something to black out her window.  But, I didn’t want to spend a lot of money because she is 20 years old and will be moving out soon… I hope… maybe.  So in a pinch store bought can work.

If you want something that’s going to last and have style, Custom Window Treatments is the way to go.  There’s really nothing like it on the market.  I will warn you, once you go custom, you’ll never go back to store bought.

If you are not planning on living in your current home for a long stay, then have non-functioning drape panels made.  It will dress up your window, look fabulous, but when you move, you can take them with you.

We have our very own workroom, with an amazingly talented seamstress.  My clients are always amazed once they have installed the new window treatments.  The blind stitching we use makes it worth it alone.  Below is an example of what I’m talking about.

The next thing you need is a great installer.  You might think well that’s easy, it’s just a few screws in the wall.  Let me just say from someone who has installed my own hardware, it’s a lot harder than it looks and the installers I use have seen every type of “issue” that may come up.  Trust me, they do come up.  Leaving it in the hands of the professionals will in fact save you time, money, and a lot of frustrations.  This is why we include professional installation with all our custom window treatments.  It’s really not an option not to, and that’s because we want to make sure the beautiful window treatments look amazing for years to come.

We have you covered!

Although we include window treatment designs with our Interior Design clients, you may do most of your decorating yourself.  You just need the resources to design and make window treatments that has your own personality to it.  This is why here at Blooming Daisy we offer a stand alone Window Treatment service.  We have an endless supply of fabric and can guide you in designing that last needed touch for your home.
